How is the customs duty calculated?

Household appliances are estimated at 40% DI, 0.25% parafiscal and 20% VAT — and because the value includes transport to Morocco, a heavy machine pays duty on its own shipping too. Before importing, check 220 V compatibility, the availability of spare parts, and compare the full landed cost with local promo prices.

CIF = Price + Shipping + Insurance DI = CIF × Rate TVA = (CIF + DI + PFI) × TVA Rate

Worked examples with real numbers

Fridge at €500 + €80 shipping

CIF ≈ 6,351 MAD. DI = 6,351 × 40% ≈ 2,540 MAD, PFI ≈ 16 MAD, VAT ≈ 1,781 MAD. Total ≈ 4,338 MAD — almost the price of a second fridge!

Washing machine at €350 with EU origin proof

CIF ≈ 3,832 MAD. With EUR.1: DI = 0, PFI ≈ 10 MAD, VAT ≈ 768 MAD. Total ≈ 778 MAD instead of ≈2,600 — and check the local promo: it may still win.

Expert tips to pay less — legally

  • Shipping is part of the customs value: heavy appliances pay duty on their own freight — always compute the landed cost.
  • Check 220 V compatibility and plug standards before buying abroad.
  • EU-origin appliances can zero the 40% DI with an EUR.1 — ask the seller first.
  • Local promotions during Ramadan and sales seasons often beat the total import cost.
  • Keep the invoice with the model reference — customs may verify energy-class and conformity.

Documents & authorisations to watch

For formal clearance: invoice, payment proof, shipping documents; large appliances may require conformity verification under Moroccan standards (IMANOR). Personal-use single units in moving shipments are simpler.

Frequently asked questions: Home appliances

How much is customs on a fridge in Morocco?

Estimate: DI 40% + PFI 0.25% + VAT 20% on price + shipping. A €580 landed-value fridge costs roughly 4,300 MAD in fees without an origin certificate.

Is it worth importing appliances from Europe?

Only with an origin certificate (EUR.1) or for models unavailable locally. Otherwise, local promotions on total landed cost usually win.

Why did customs charge more than my calculation?

The taxable value includes shipping and insurance to Morocco, and customs may counter-value if the invoice looks too low. Our calculator includes shipping for that reason.

Do appliances need conformity documents?

Some categories are checked against Moroccan technical standards. Keep the model reference and any CE documentation on the invoice.

Can an MRE bring appliances when moving back?

Definitive-return regimes may exempt personal household goods under strict conditions (residence duration, use). Appliances stay subject to the return cargo inventory rules.
