How is the customs duty calculated?
The MRE life alternates between three regimes: AT (foreign car duty-free 180 days/year), the franchise for personal effects and small gifts brought along a stay, and — on definitive return — the possible clearance of the vehicle (under 5 years, MCV value) or its import under the transfer-of-residence regime when the strict conditions are met. Our calculator estimates the clearance cost before you decide anything.

Expert tips to pay less — legally
- Most MREs never need clearance: AT's 180 days cover the vast majority of stays.
- Gifts in personal luggage within reasonable quantities pass smoothly; commercial volumes do not.
- For a definitive return, prepare the inventory early and ask about the transfer-of-residence franchise conditions.
- Keep entry receipts and pension/work certificates abroad — they document your non-resident status.
- Budget before deciding: run the car clearance numbers here, then compare with buying locally.

Frequently asked questions: Customs for MRE
I am an MRE — do I have to clear my car?
No, as long as you stay within the 180 days of temporary admission per year and the car remains registered abroad. Clearance is only for definitive Moroccan registration.
What can I bring as gifts without paying duty?
Personal effects and small gifts in reasonable quantities travel in your luggage duty-free. New commercial-looking quantities get taxed like imports.
What is the transfer-of-residence exemption?
A regime that can exempt personal effects — and under strict conditions a vehicle — when you move back definitively after years abroad. Conditions are checked strictly; document everything.
How much does definitive car import cost for an MRE?
Same as everyone: DI 17.5% + PFI 0.25% + VAT 20% on the MCV value, with the 5-year rule. Use our calculator with your real numbers before deciding.
Do MREs get any customs privileges?
Yes: temporary admission for the car, franchise on personal effects, transfer-of-residence benefits on definitive return, and seasonal facilitation programmes at the borders (Marhaba operation).
