Duty rates for this category
| Item | How it is calculated | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Customs value CIF | Price + shipping | Keep the prescription if personal use |
| Import duty DI | CIF × 2.5% | Reduced for medical devices |
| Parafiscal PFI | CIF × 0.25% | Systematic |
| VAT | (CIF + DI + PFI) × 7% | Reduced health rate |
How is the customs duty calculated?
The Moroccan tariff grants medical devices a preferential 2.5% DI (instead of 17.5–40%) and a 7% VAT — total fees stay near 10% of the value. Conditions: the device must genuinely be medical (not a wellness gadget), personal use is favoured, and some equipment (imaging, strong emitting devices) requires prior authorisation from the Ministry of Health.
Worked examples with real numbers
Glucose meter kit at €100
CIF ≈ 1,095 MAD. DI = 1,095 × 2.5% ≈ 27 MAD, PFI ≈ 3 MAD, VAT ≈ 79 MAD. Total ≈ 109 MAD — barely 10%: health imports are intentionally cheap.
Hearing aids at €900
CIF ≈ 9,855 MAD. DI ≈ 246 MAD, PFI ≈ 25 MAD, VAT = 10,126 × 7% ≈ 709 MAD. Total ≈ 980 MAD. Keep the medical prescription — it defends the reduced classification.
Expert tips to pay less — legally
- Attach the medical prescription to the parcel — it is the strongest proof for the reduced classification.
- Wellness gadgets (massage guns, fitness trackers) are NOT medical devices — they pay the electronics rates.
- Check with the Ministry of Health for devices that emit, measure body functions professionally, or are implant-adjacent.
- Ask for CE/FDA certificates on the invoice to smooth any standards verification.
- Recurring supplies (test strips) in small quantities pass more smoothly when clearly medical.
Documents & authorisations to watch
Prescription for personal use, invoice with the device reference, conformity certificates (CE). Larger shipments: Ministry of Health authorisation and registration of the importer.

Frequently asked questions: Medical equipment
What is the customs rate on medical devices in Morocco?
A reduced 2.5% import duty plus 0.25% parafiscal and 7% VAT — about 10% of the value in total, versus 38–68% for ordinary goods.
Do I need an authorisation to import a medical device?
For personal-use standard devices (meters, monitors, hearing aids): usually no. For professional or emitting equipment: yes, from the Ministry of Health — check before ordering.
Are prescription glasses taxed as medical equipment?
Corrective glasses generally benefit from the same favourable treatment when clearly medical (prescription). Fashion sunglasses pay the standard accessory rates instead.
My parcel was classified as electronics — what can I do?
Contest the classification with the invoice, the device description and your prescription. The difference is significant: 2.5% instead of 17.5% DI.
Can a company import medical equipment?
Yes, under the same preferential rates, but with business registration and — for many device classes — prior ministerial authorisation.
