How is the customs duty calculated?

AT is a temporary suspension of duties granted to foreign-registered vehicles belonging to non-residents (MREs, tourists). The counter: 180 days maximum per calendar year, usable in one stay or several. On entry, customs records the date; on exit, it checks. The driver must be the beneficiary (or an authorised close relative), and the vehicle can neither be sold nor lent long-term in Morocco.

CIF = Price + Shipping + Insurance DI = CIF × Rate TVA = (CIF + DI + PFI) × TVA Rate

Worked examples with real numbers

MRE from France — summer + December

Stay from 20 June to 25 August (66 days) then 22 December to 4 January (14 days in 2026). Total: 80 days ✓ — 100 days of margin left that year.

Overstaying by 20 days

An overstay exposes you to a fine proportional to the duration and, in serious cases, to vehicle impounding. Always plan your exit before the 180-day deadline.

Expert tips to pay less — legally

  • Track your consumed days after every crossing — customs records them and the limit arrives faster than you think.
  • Keep the entry proof (the receipt issued at the border) in the vehicle at all times.
  • The vehicle must be registered abroad in the beneficiary's name — or with a valid notarised mandate from the owner.
  • Leaving Morocco does not reset the counter: only a new calendar year does.
  • In case of breakdown or long immobilisation, declare it to the nearest customs office to stay safe.

Documents & authorisations to watch

Documents to present: registration card, driving licence, insurance with Morocco extension (green card), ID. For a vehicle not in your name: a valid mandate (power of attorney) from the owner.

Frequently asked questions: Temporary admission

How many days does temporary admission allow?

180 days maximum per calendar year, in one or several stays. The count follows the entry and exit dates recorded by customs.

Can I leave my car in Morocco when I fly back?

No — a vehicle under AT must leave the territory. Leaving it in Morocco beyond the regime exposes you to fines and impounding.

What happens if I exceed the 180 days?

Customs applies a fine calculated on the overstay duration; serious cases can lead to the vehicle being impounded and costly regularisation.

Who can drive the vehicle under AT in Morocco?

The AT beneficiary. Lending to Moroccan residents is forbidden; very occasional lending between non-resident relatives is tolerated with the vehicle's documents.

Can I register my AT vehicle in Morocco instead?

AT requires the vehicle to stay registered abroad. To Moroccan plates, you must clear it fully (5-year rule, MCV value, taxes).
